Warming seas, overfishing, untreated sewage, pollution, coastal construction, shipping, mining, and overtourism are all taking a toll. In two decades of diving I have watched many coral reefs in the Caribbean crumble. Cyanobacteria smothering hard coral in Indonesia. Illegal fishermen hunting hammerheads by the thousand in the Galapagos. Fish populations a fraction of what they once were. Ecosystems that took thousands of years to build coming apart within a single human lifetime. The ocean produces half the oxygen we breathe, regulates our climate, and feeds billions of people.
