It is a chance to face what is happening to it and commit to the actions needed to allow corals and marine life to survive and thrive. The ocean is under pressure from every direction. Warming seas, overfishing, untreated sewage, pollution, coastal construction, shipping, mining, and overtourism are all taking a toll. In two decades of diving I have watched many coral reefs in the Caribbean crumble. Cyanobacteria smothering hard coral in Indonesia. Illegal fishermen hunting hammerheads by the thousand in the Galapagos. Fish populations a fraction of what they once were. Ecosystems that took thousands of years to build coming apart within a single human lifetime. The ocean produces half the oxygen we breathe, regulates our climate, and feeds billions of people.
