History and the future were celebrated Friday during ceremonies to officially re-launch the campus as the United States Coast Guard Training Center Birmingham-Southern. The Coast Guard announced in March that it had selected the Birmingham-Southern campus as its latest training facility. Officials said a training facility was needed to help achieve its goal of growing the force by 15,000 members. “This is a transformative moment for this city and the United States Coast Guard,” said Sen. Katie Britt, who chairs the Homeland Security appropriations subcommittee. “This is a rare and perfect fit.” Military ceremony was on display with a band and honor guard, along with a helicopter flyover outside.
