On 18 November 1987, a fire broke out beneath a wooden escalator at King’s Cross Underground station.
At first, it seemed small. Then heat and smoke burst into the ticket hall, trapping ordinary commuters in a place they thought was safe.
31 people died.
Afterwards, 157 safety recommendations were made.
