This galaxy packs a punch You’re looking at Messier 64, or the Black Eye Galaxy. This galaxy is located 17 million light-years away in the constellation Coma Berenices. Messier 64 is a spiral galaxy like our own Milky Way, but it has a unique internal current that sets it apart. The gas in the outer regions of the galaxy rotates in the opposite direction of its internal regions. This contrasting motion might be caused by this galaxy merging with another one over a billion years ago. Where the opposing swirls of gases collide, new stars form.
