Magma is molten rock found beneath Earth's surface, where intense heat causes rocks to melt. When this molten material erupts through a volcano or a crack and reaches the surface, it is called lava. Both are made of molten rock, but their names depend on location. Magma also contains more dissolved gases, many of which escape during an eruption, leaving lava with a lower gas content.
