So the deep sea miners are set to destroy an incredible, alien world:
👽 About 75% of deep-sea creatures create their own light through bioluminescence, using it to attract mates, lure prey, or camouflage against predators.
👽 Deep-sea organisms live slow, long lives. Some black coral found in Hawaiian waters is estimated to be over 4200 years old.
👽 Due to the extreme pressure, creatures are often soft-bodied with few bones. They have developed giant, gaping mouths and stretching stomachs to eat prey larger than themselves.
👽The main source of food on the abyssal plains is "marine snow" - a constant shower of organic debris, dead plankton, and fecal pellets from the surface.
👽 Over 90% of deep-sea species in the area most targeted for mining are new to science.
The good news: we can stop the destruction before it begins.
