The first Bee took place in 1925, but it took all the way until 1956 for the boys to outnumber the girls among the spellers. There were 34 boys that year and 29 girls, but the young ladies dominated once the competition began, grabbing the top four spots. The winner was Melody Sachko of Pennsylvania (that's her in the middle), followed by Sandra Owen from Ohio (left), Ann Malone Warren from Georgia (right), and Karin Carter of California.
