OpenAI's Ben Nimmo reveals two covert Chinese influence operations that used ChatGPT to generate content posted by fake accounts posing as Americans. The first, dubbed "Data Center Bandwagon" , ran in January and February of this year. Chinese operators used ChatGPT to generate cartoons and comments linking rising electricity prices to data centers in the US, trying to stoke domestic anger about AI infrastructure buildout. They also used it to harass and criticize CCP dissidents in Chinese. The goal: steer existing American debates in a direction aligned with CCP strategic objectives, without anyone knowing where it was coming from.
