Phoenix ranked among the worst major cities in America for air pollution again. According to the American Lung Association, the Phoenix-Mesa area ranked 4th worst in the country for ozone pollution, 17th worst for short-term particle pollution, and 15th worst for year-round particle pollution. Officials say extreme heat, traffic, construction dust, wildfire smoke, and rapid growth all play a role in the Valley’s air quality problems.
