Before Scottsdale Fashion Square became one of Arizona’s most iconic shopping destinations, the land had a completely different life. In the 1950s, the area near Scottsdale and Camelback was home to rodeo grounds before plans formed for a small shopping center. Scottsdale Fashion Square officially opened in 1961 as a three-story open-air retail center, anchored by local names like Goldwater’s and AJ Bayless. Over the decades, the mall kept expanding and eventually transformed into the luxury shopping destination people know today, adding major stores like Neiman Marcus, Nordstrom, Dillard’s, Macy’s, Harkins, Apple, and dozens of high-end brands. Today, Scottsdale Fashion Square has grown from a former rodeo site into one of the biggest retail landmarks in Arizona, with more renovations and new restaurants still coming in 2026.
