For over a decade, Álvaro Enciso has walked deep into the Arizona desert placing crosses for migrants who never made it across. Each cross marks the place where someone’s journey ended — many of them unknown, with no name ever recorded. Since 2013, Enciso has placed more than 2,000 crosses across the Sonoran Desert through a project he calls “Where Dreams Die.” The crosses are made with small strips of aluminum from soda cans left behind in the desert, painted in bright colors to represent Latin America. Enciso says the mission is about making sure people are not forgotten. “Every cross means someone once stood here — someone with dreams, family, and hope.” Even at 80 years old, he says he’ll keep going as long as his body lets him.
