HBCU Students in STEM Success- 🔬ECSU biology students recently became the first researchers from an HBCU to participate in the American Campus Tree Genome Project and have their research accepted into the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI), one of the world’s largest genetic databases. Using one of the oldest oak trees on campus as their living laboratory, students spent months collecting samples, extracting DNA, sequencing genetic material, and using bioinformatics tools to annotate the tree’s genome. Their work is now publicly available to researchers and scientists around the world. This groundbreaking achievement not only highlights the power of undergraduate research at HBCUs but also ensures these students have left a lasting mark on the scientific community.
