This #MuseumMonday we’re highlighting Charles Deering’s long term commitment to supporting the arts. At his estate in Sitges, Spain, Deering assembled collections that included paintings, sculpture, metalwork, rugs, furniture, tapestries, books, and pottery. He combined several houses there into a single site known as “Mar y Cel." Deering’s goal was for his collections and projects in Spain to support artists and provide opportunities for study and production, though he later determined that sustaining this work abroad was not feasible. The collections were ultimately transferred to institutions in the United States, including the Art Institute of Chicago and his estate in Florida. His will also created an endowment for the College of Liberal Arts at Northwestern University and made provisions for hospitals in Chicago and Miami.
