On June 14, 1777, the Continental Congress adopted the first official flag of the United States, featuring 13 stars and 13 stripes representing the original colonies. Aboard USS Constitution, we also display the 1795 flag that flew during many of the ship’s most notable years. That flag featured 15 stars and 15 stripes following the admission of two states to the Union. In 1818, Congress established the design still used today, retaining 13 stripes and adding a star for each state. Today, we also celebrate the 251st birthday of the United States Army. Established on June 14, 1775, as the Continental Army, it has served the nation for more than 250 years. For generations, America’s military services have stood together in defense of the nation. USS Constitution and her crew proudly salute the Soldiers of the United States Army for their service, sacrifice, and commitment to protecting the freedoms we enjoy today. #USArmy #OldIronsides #USSConstitution #MilitaryHistory
