Switzerland has rejected a proposal to cap its population at 10 million, as voters prioritized economic stability and relations with the European Union over concerns that immigration is straining public services and driving up rents.
A projection by national broadcaster SRF, which traditionally calls referendum results, showed about 45% of voters in favour of the proposal and 55% against.
The vote had unsettled businesses amid concerns it could jeopardize the free movement of labor between Switzerland and the EU, the country’s main trading partner.
