A study found that at least 58 Tapanuli orangutans - an endangered species found only in and around Indonesia’s Batang Toru forest in North Sumatra - were killed in the floods. The forest’s western block is home to most of the species’ estimated population of 800 individuals. The report, a joint study by Borneo Futures, World Weather Attribution and Liverpool John Moores University, surveyed only the western block. As a result, the actual death toll across the wider forest may be higher. The study also found that human-induced climate change has likely increased the frequency and intensity of extreme rainfall around the Malacca Strait, placing the Tapanuli orangutan’s habitat at greater risk. #orangutan #indonesia #animals
