Albanians continued to protest on Saturday against a planned luxury resort backed by a company linked to Jared Kushner, the son-in-law of US President Donald Trump.
The project is meant to be developed on an environmentally sensitive part of the Adriatic coast, the Vjosa-Narta protected landscape, a wetland home to flamingos, seals and sea turtle nesting sites. Animal conservation groups say if the project goes ahead, there is a risk the flamingos will disappear.
Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama, who championed the luxury resort deal in an interview with Reuters this week, asserts that the development is legal and that habitats would be protected.
Albanians have been protesting against the project for weeks, sometimes leading to heated clashes.
