The International Olympic Committee has tried gene testing of female athletes before. In fact, the IOC’s new requirement that female athletes be tested for the SRY gene is almost identical to a policy discontinued in 1999 over concerns about inaccuracies, costs and the psychological trauma it caused. Announced in March under the auspices of the IOC's "Working Group on the Protection of the Female Category," the policy was adopted to ban "biological males" – including transgender women – from competing in Olympic events for females due to concerns over potential competitive advantages.
