January 10, 1879: President Hayes signed the first executive order setting aside an original, much larger Salt River Reserve covering approximately 680,000 acres. This initial order sparked major outrage and pushback from around 5,000 non-native settlers, farmers, and speculators whose land claims were absorbed into the reservation. June 14, 1879: Yielding to pressure, President Hayes canceled the original order and signed the new Executive Order of June 14, 1879. This order drastically reduced the reserve to roughly 46,627 acres, leaving the Salt River O'odham and Piipaash disconnected from their relatives along the Gila River. Today, the Akimel O’odham and Xalychidom Piipaash of Salt River, Arizona celebrate their resiliency and appreciation for the ancestors that fought to keep them in their ancestral lands.
