Tomiko Yoshikawa was the first Japanese woman to race at Le Mans. At 22, in the middle of her personal struggles, a friend invited her to watch a race at Suzuka Circuit. She somehow felt that sense of living with purpose while watching young people working over engines and pushing themselves toward something. She started to get a job and slowly saved enough to buy her first car and went to Suzuka every weekend after that. She went on to race across Japan for nearly three decades, in whatever series would have her and switching her attention from open-wheel racing to endurance after a serious crash in 1986 during the Fuji Grand Champion series. Her path to Le Mans wasn't straightforward either. In 1991, she missed her shot after failing to get the proper licence in time.
