Meet the Vietnam Pheasant, one of the rarest birds on Earth. With just over 500 individuals remaining in zoos, conservationists are working to secure the species’ future. 🇻🇳
Once found throughout Vietnam’s lowland forests, years of war, habitat loss, and hunting pushed this species to the brink. In fact, there hasn’t been a confirmed sighting in the wild in more than 25 years.
Now, the Vietnam Pheasant Recovery Team, including officialZSL and VietNature, is working to prepare for the species’ eventual return to nature. The Vietnam Pheasant is one of the first species supported by the Colossal Species Reintroduction Fund, established by the colossal Foundation in partnership with Re:wild.
Support from the fund has helped expand breeding capacity at Viet Nature’s Rare Pheasant Breeding Centre and support a multi-stakeholder conservation planning workshop focused on developing best practices for pre-release conditioning and future reintroduction efforts.
