Her name was Daphy Michel. She was 31 years old. She came to America seeking asylum. She deserved so much better than this. A judge ordered her release from jail. Her brother was waiting to pick her up. But ICE intervened first — fitted her with an ankle monitor and left her at a Pittsburgh bus shelter, 25 miles away, with untreated mental health issues and a significant language barrier. She spent her final days at that bus shelter. She died of hypothermia on March 2. The Allegheny County Medical Examiner ruled her death a homicide. ICE's defense? She was released "with a fully charged phone, in sunny weather, in the middle of Pittsburgh, where public transport is readily available." "I can only imagine that she was freezing and that she was cold," her cousin Linda said. "For her to have to suffer in that type of way in a country like this — it's not fair, and it doesn't make sense." Her family is suing. Her name deserves to be remembered.
