A targeted car bombing today (Monday, 22 Dec) in southern Moscow killed Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov, one of Russia’s most senior military officers. The explosive device was placed under Sarvarov’s parked vehicle in a residential area, killing the 56-year-old General (officially—at the hospital he ‘succumbed to injuries’). Russian investigators say the attack was likely carried out by Ukrainian special services, but no confirmation from Kyiv has been reported. . Sarvarov was the head of the Russian General Staff’s operational training department and had a long combat record, including service in the North Caucasus, the Chechen wars, and oversight roles during Russia’s military intervention in Syria. This is the third assassination of a Russian military official in Moscow in the past year...part of a broader pattern of special operations targeting senior officers inside Russia.
