In addition to reporting earlier this week—now U.S. President Trump signed a truly historic Executive Order....not tying the U.S. even tighter to Europe, but committing the military to defend Qatar, a major non-NATO ally in the Middle East. The order states that any armed attack on Qatar’s territory, sovereignty, or critical infrastructure will be considered a direct threat to U.S. security (much in the same way an attack on one NATO ally prompts a defense from all signatories), and promises a range of responses — from diplomatic & economic measures to military action if necessary. . The announcement came at the tail end of Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu’s visit to the White House, where Israel issued an apology to Qatar’s leadership following the airstrike in Doha targeting Hamas operatives.
