183 children died against one door — bolted to open just one child wide.
Sunderland, 1883. Two thousand children rushed the stairs of the Victoria Hall for a prize, and jammed against a door fixed nearly shut so staff could check tickets one at a time. 183 were crushed; the youngest was three.
But the grief forced a change. The law was rewritten so public doors open outward, and the push-bar was invented because of them. Every safe exit you use, you owe in part to these children.
