An all-male Parliament tried to ban these women from their jobs — and the women won. After 1842, women barred from working underground took surface jobs sorting coal at the pit brow, wearing trousers to do it. Scandalised, Parliament moved to ban them from that too in 1887. So they sent a deputation to London, work clothes in hand, and got the ban dropped. #BritishHistory #ForgottenHistory #VictorianHistory #WomensHistory #SocialHistory
