Strathnaver, 1814: to clear the glen for sheep, the Sutherland estate’s factor set families’ roofs alight, too fast for the old and sick to escape. Margaret MacKay, over ninety, was pulled out by her daughter and died five days later. The factor was acquitted in fifteen minutes.
