In 1863, kitchen maid Margaret Davey burned to death when her crinoline caught fire reaching for spoons. The wide cage skirts were death-traps — trapped air fed the flames, and the cage held the wearer inside. Hundreds died this way every year, while the press just mocked the fashion.
