People thought this would be impossible to build. With only 2 in the entire world, the laser phase plate enhances cryo-electron microscopy so scientists can see details in human cells never seen before. These details can’t be seen by current tools, including structures that may hold the key to understanding how diseases start and how to stop them. The concept was originally proposed by BerkeleyLab UCBerkeleyOfficial physicists Holger Müller and Robert Glaeser more than 15 years ago. Today, it’s a reality.
