In 2002, NASA intern Thad Roberts and accomplices stole 17 pounds of lunar samples worth about $21 million from Johnson Space Center. Roberts and girlfriend Tiffany Fowler later scattered some rocks on a hotel bed in a symbolic attempt to have “sex on the moon.” A Belgian collector alerted authorities, leading to an FBI sting in Orlando. Roberts received an eight year sentence and served about six years. Fowler received house arrest and community service.
