Naegleria fowleri is a free living amoeba that evolved to feed on bacteria and organic matter in warm freshwater. Its shape constantly changes through pseudopods, which allow movement and engulfment of prey by phagocytosis. Human infection is accidental and occurs when contaminated water enters the nose, allowing the organism to migrate along olfactory nerves to the brain. The irregular appearance seen in electron microscopy reflects its flexible membrane and feeding structures.
