Research shows that repetitive negative thinking, known as rumination, can prolong psychological stress and is associated with higher cortisol levels. However, discussing problems in a constructive way may improve emotional regulation and social support, which can reduce stress. The effects depend on whether conversations encourage coping and problem solving rather than repeated focus on distress. Works Cited: Nolen Hoeksema, Susan, et al. "Rethinking Rumination."
