Modern cats all trace their ancestry to a small predator that lived around 25 million years ago. Over millions of years, changing climates and habitats pushed different lineages to specialize in their own ways. Tigers evolved for power and ambush hunting in forests, lions became social hunters of open grasslands, jaguars developed the strongest bite relative to their size, and cheetahs sacrificed strength for incredible speed. Snow leopards adapted to high mountains with thick fur and enlarged nasal passages, while pumas evolved as versatile generalists. Despite these differences, all members of the cat family retain the same core predatory traits, including retractable claws, forward facing eyes, and highly specialized senses that make them some of the most efficient hunters on Earth.
