In 2001, the female humpback whale was struck by a boat propeller near Sydney, Australia, leaving wounds estimated to be nearly 30 centimeters deep. Marine biologists expected the injuries to be fatal, yet she recovered and continued her annual migrations along the Australian coast. More than a decade later, Blade Runner was even observed with a calf, showing that the trauma had not prevented her from reproducing.
