This weekend, community members will gather in downtown State College to celebrate Juneteenth National Independence Day. Beginning over two years after the Emancipation Proclamation was issued, Juneteenth commemorates the day enslaved Texans learned they were free, June 19, 1865. A year later, those who were freed in Texas organized an annual celebration, first known as Emancipation Day, which later spread nationwide and became recognized as a federal holiday in 2021.
