The St. Augustine Lighthouse was the second lighthouse, built from 1871-74 while the first lighthouse was still standing. The first lighthouse was built in the 1700s of coquina by Spain, who also used wooden watchtowers. It became an official U.S. lighthouse in 1824. It fell into the ocean by 1880.
