A Surprise man is facing multiple felony charges after police say he set his ex-girlfriend’s home and vehicles on fire while people were inside. According to Surprise Police, officers responded to a house fire near Grand Avenue and Dysart Road just before 3 a.m. Thursday. The victim reportedly told dispatchers that her ex-boyfriend was on the property setting the home and vehicles on fire. Everyone inside the home was safely evacuated, and firefighters were able to contain the fire before it spread beyond the structure. Police arrested 56-year-old Carman Lee Caldwell at the scene. He is facing several charges, including attempted murder, arson, burglary, and endangerment. The investigation remains ongoing with assistance from federal ATF agents.
