Happy Juneteenth! 🙏🫂 Today commemorates June 19th, 1865, when enslaved Black Americans in Galveston, Texas were informed of their freedom over two years after the Emancipation Proclamation was issued in the US. Over time, the day has become both a celebration of black freedom, and a reflection on the ongoing impact of black history, culture, and achievement in the United States. Music has long served as a space for artists to document, challenge, and reflect on that history through their own experiences and perspectives. The voices featured here, artists like Denzel Curry, Billy Woods, Vince Staples, redveil, and so many more, offer different viewpoints on identity, community, perseverance, and the realities that shape their lives and art.
