Survival is tracked from the date of diagnosis through cancer registrars in each state, who then compare survival rates of children with cancer to those without cancer. This gives researchers a realistic sense of the prognosis for a disease that is not skewed by unrelated causes of deaths. It also helps track if treatments are really working, which is a critical data point in the fight for cures for all children with cancer.
