The conversation around AI often assumes that companies are rapidly replacing human labor with machines. This chart tells a very different story. The median company spends just $11.38 per employee each month on AI. Even among the top 10% of firms, spending reaches only about $611 per employee. Meanwhile, the median software engineer earns nearly $16,000 per month. In other words, most organizations are not investing in AI at levels that would support widespread workforce replacement. What we’re actually witnessing is a massive testing phase. A small number of companies are moving aggressively. The top 1% spend more than $7,400 per employee each month, indicating substantial investments in agents, infrastructure, cloud compute, and automation. Everyone else is still experimenting. That distinction matters. Technology adoption rarely happens evenly.
