On June 16, 1851, the Sacramento Transcript and Placer Times newspapers merge their printing offices and began publishing as a combined paper. The Placer Times, founded on April 28, 1849, was Sacramento’s first newspaper. The paper grew beyond publishing weekly but soon found itself in competition with the Sacramento Transcript, which began publishing on April 1, 1850. These newspapers started a printing war by cutting costs on advertisement space all at the expense of cutting the wages of reporters, printers and typesetters. Four printers from the Sacramento Transcript left to start their own newspaper, published daily, beginning on March 19, 1851. That newspaper was The Daily Union. The Sacramento Union, under a few different names over the years, was the longest running newspaper in Sacramento history until it closed its doors in January 1994.
