Eva Clarke says her mother, Anka, was loaded onto a train bound for the concentration camp Mauthausen as the Nazis made a final push in April 1945 to exterminate slave laborers. Anka was nearly nine months pregnant. Eva says her mother credited a small act of kindness from a local farmer with saving her life. “The train was stopped, and the doors were opened, and a farmer walked by, and he saw my mother. And he had such a shock. My mother described herself as looking like a scarcely living pregnant skeleton,” says Eva. “And this farmer brought her a glass of milk. She maintained that saved her life.
