Notorious Nazi doctor Josef Mengele is known for his gruesome experiments on concentration camp prisoners during World War II. While inspecting a row of naked women at Auschwitz, he spotted Hana Berger-Moran’s mother, who was a few months pregnant. Berger-Moran says Mengele asked her mother in German, “Good looking woman. Are you pregnant?” Faced with a life-or-death question, her mother answered, “Nein, I’m not.” Author Wendy Holden wrote about Berger-Moran and two other Holocaust survivors who were secretly pregnant in the death camp. “Each of them at that moment had to decide whether to confess that they were or to deny it, whether that would save them and their unborn child or not,” says Holden. “Each of them sensed that they were in the presence of great danger, and they each denied it.” Holden explains that they were able to hide their pregnancies while working as slave laborers because they were given baggy dresses from people who’d been gassed. #wwii #holocaust #worldwartwo
