Bet you didn’t think a shark could be this cute, did you? This is an Indo-Pacific leopard shark, also known as a zebra shark. They are found across tropical reefs of the Indian and Southwest Pacific Ocean. Juveniles are born with bold, zebra-like stripes, but as they mature into adults reaching 7 to 8 feet in length, their pattern shifts to a golden-tan body with dark leopard-like spots. These peaceful, nocturnal hunters are usually found resting or hunting over sandy flats, rubble, and coral reefs. They use their slender, flexible bodies to probe into crevices and dig into the sediment for mollusks, crustaceans, and small fish, maintaining balance in reef ecosystems. Sadly, the species is considered endangered globally due to overfishing, habitat degradation, and bycatch.
