For a long time the mornings started the same way.
A stomach ache, a pale face, “I feel sick.” And a small, exhausted part of me wondered if she meant it.
She did.
What I didn’t understand back then is that fear doesn’t always look like fear in a child. It looks like a sore tummy, a headache, a kid who genuinely cannot eat. The body sounds the alarm before the words can catch up, and the gut is usually where it lands first.
For a long time I tried logic. “You’re fine.” “You were ok last night”. None of it touched what was actually happening in her body, because you can’t reason with a stomach that thinks it’s in danger.
Once I stopped trying to talk her out of it and started settling her body instead, the mornings slowly stopped being a war.
