What is Juneteenth? While America celebrates July 4th as Independence Day. That day didn’t grant independence for all, as Black people were still enslaved in what was a “free“ country. But on June 19 (also known as Juneteenth) 1865, southern slaves, specifically in Galveston, Texas, were notified of their free freedom. Mind you, this was roughly 2 years after the emancipation proclamation was signed, which freed the slaves. Remember, southern owners were not going to willingly relinquish their “property” and there was no social media to spread the word. So southern Black people unknowingly suffered enslaved for two additional years. A tragedy. July 4, 1776, lacks true integrity without June 19, 1865.
