Breaking News! Angola has officially designated its first Wetland of International Importance, Lisima Lya Mwono, meaning "Source of Life." This new Ramsar (conventiononwetlands) site is one of the world’s largest, is home to the Angolan Highlands Water Tower (AHWT) and is a major step toward formal protection of the Okavango’s headwaters. The AHWT holds the equivalent of 170 million Olympic-size swimming pools of water and supplies 95% of the water sustaining the Okavango Basin and the world-renowned Okavango Delta. Having Ramsar designation for this area comes with protections that help underpin the water and food security of tens of millions of people across seven African countries, sustains one of Africa’s largest remaining elephant populations and is home to dozens of species found nowhere else — some potentially new to science.
