The National Geographic Okavango Wilderness Project works with local communities; NGOs; and the governments of Angola, Namibia, and Botswana to secure permanent, sustainable protection for the greater Okavango Watershed. The team has been surveying and collecting scientific data on the river system, and to date, has helped describe 73 new species to science, and estimated 275 potentially new to science and 300 new to Angola. In honor of the upcoming 50th anniversary of Angola’s independence, follow intotheokavango to see 50 species that their team, in collaboration with local community members, has helped document for academic science in the Lisima landscape of Angola.
