Congratulations to Florida A&M University and Virginia State, this year’s HBCU recipients of the 2026 IIE American Passport Project grant. 📍The initiative helps Pell Grant-eligible students obtain their first U.S. passport, removing a common financial barrier that can prevent students from pursuing study abroad opportunities and other international experiences. Established in 2021, the IIE American Passport Project was created to help diversify participation in study-abroad programs and expand access to global learning opportunities for students from a variety of backgrounds. The program aims to help 10,000 U.S. students obtain passports by 2030. Each year, colleges and universities across the country are selected to participate in the initiative. HBCUs have consistently been represented among the recipients, and for the 2026 cohort, FAMU and Virginia State University were the two HBCUs selected among 40 institutions nationwide.
