The government wants to ban under-16s from social media. And almost everyone agrees. So let me ask the uncomfortable question...what if we’re solving the wrong problem? Social media alone doesn’t make young people anxious. Loneliness makes young people anxious. Purposelessness makes young people anxious. Feeling unseen, unheard, and like they don’t belong anywhere, that’s what makes young people anxious. For a generation that has watched youth clubs close, sports facilities disappear, and public spaces become unwelcoming, social media isn’t the cause of their disconnection. It’s where they went after we removed everything else. Banning the platform without asking why young people are on it for eight hours a day lets every decision-maker who stripped communities of resource completely off the hook.
